HAPPY NEW YEAR !

Here’s wishing all of you a very Happy New Year with the best of health and all good things for 2017!

LONG NIGHTS & SHORT DAYS

I have to say at this time of the year with such long nights, I notice I like to sleep more. I feel great after a long winter’s night ! But the other hand the short days don’t make me want to stay indoors next to a blazing fire. Instead, I get the urge to get outdoors and soak in the peace and quiet. I love the solitude of winter. I love the empty streets and deep quiet that settles in after a short day. I also spend more time sitting outside breathing in the pure, clean, cold air and watching the bright sharp stars twinkle in the sky over head.

THERE IS NOTHING LIKE WATCHING A SPECTACULAR SUNSET

Watching the sunset behind Mount Agamenticus from Lords Point in Kennebunk, Maine a couple of days ago was stunningly gorgeous. It was quiet and still with barely a breeze off the water. The houses were mostly dark. There was no traffic. And the western sky was a deep vivid smear of red, orange, gold and green. As we lingered gazing at the southern coast as it curved away from us, the lights in the towns along the water came on and twinkled in random clusters.  All the light house beacons could all be seen in a long line as we looked down the coast. It was breathtakingly beautiful.

The sun went into clouds as it sank to the horizon. The snow was reflecting the blueish color of the sky from directly overhead. The neighbors’ houses the next street over were all silhouetted by the burning sunset colors. Sunset. 5×7. Acrylic. Available. Photo: Mary Byrom

MY PROMISE TO MYSELF
I am painting the dusk and evening scenes that I promised myself I would do on a daily basis. With the holidays almost over and the new year starting that will be easier to do. Even in the midst of all the holiday flurry I did manage to paint a few plein air pieces in my neighborhood this week. Now I have all my winter painting clothing and gear ready to go so I’m looking forward to many more evenings painting outdoors in the gathering dusk.
