Haiku Series ~ The Sea #2

The Sea #2
The Sea #2

I’m watching a storm pulling out to sea. I watch many storms race out to sea. I’ve watched years of storms blow out to sea.  The weather often moves in from the west and travels out over the ocean.  This is one of my memories of a big storm.

New Ecourse Coming Soon!

Hope you all are having a great week and experiencing some of this great Indian Summer weather we are having in Maine!

As some of you know I’ve been working on a new ecourse for painters showing you the best and fastest ways to get the most out of your painting time. I  keep posting that it will be coming soon…. Why?

Because the kickoff  is being delayed due to having to restock my galleries.  I’m painting like crazy! A good problem to have…being popular and loved  by my fans and collectors.

But, I am truly trying to get this new course out to all those busy folks who wish they had more time for their art. I heard your plea. A little more painting time please !

We are all so busy , way too busy and we need time for ourselves. Time to replenish our souls. Time to just stop and breathe in the fresh air. Time to just be.

“Nature feeds the soul. Spend time in nature and you will be filled with joy.” Mary Byrom

NEW ECOURSE COMING SOON ! JOIN HERE TO SEE THE INSIDE SCOOP, RECEIVE THE SNEAK PEEK VIDEOS AND HEAR ABOUT THE  BEST WAYS TO REFRESH YOUR MIND, HEART AND BEING

Hurricane Along the Maine Coast

It’s hurricane season on the coast…

Last week I changed my work schedule twice to go set up my easel on the coast to paint the great surf  that hurricane Jose sent our way. We were lucky. No storm.  Only the big waves arrived here on the Maine coast. The surfers and plein air painters were very happy.
So were all the visitors here on vacation after the summertime crowds are gone. It was beautiful.  I met the nicest people while out painting this week. Some of these visitors had never been to Maine before. They were amazed at the variety of landscapes they were seeing. Maine has such a variety of landscapes with eastern and western water views.  People couldn’t believe they could watch sunrise and sunsets over the water. There’s nothing quite like this amazing amount of peninsulas and islands we have in our back yard.

They marveled that I actually lived here. I could go  anytime I liked and look at the amazing views.  I remember when I made the decision to move to the seacoast. It had to do with a memory. Of course it was from vacations when I was a child. My grandmother loved Maine. My mother loved Maine. My mother brought us to Maine on a summer vacation. Even though I had plenty of ocean time on Cape Cod when I was a small child, it was South Harpswell, Maine that made me feel like I had arrived home.
The big old house on the water with its little tiny sandy beach looking out to the little island in the bay stole my heart away. The fingers of land reaching out into the water with nooks and crannies, the big dark pines, the little harbors packed with fishing boats and docks and the clusters of little old houses scattered among the thick woods and across the the rocky fields made me want to stay there forever.  Whenever I go back to South Harpswell I get the same feeling that I did when I first went there. I feel like I am home.
I have favorite places to I paint whenever I go there. It’s closer to my house than Boston is. Sadly the sweet, classic, white farm house has been completely over hauled into a plastic summer vacation home. But the bones of the real house are still there and the tiny beach still looks out at the same island. Mackerel Cove still looks beautiful at any time of the day and in any season. And when I get to a nice open spot on Basin Road in West Harpswell and look west on a crisp fall day I can see Mount Washington in New Hampshire with a bright cap of snow on it.
It’s no accident I love painting landscapes.

Sunset, Dusk & Evening

Labor Day came… and I took 3 days off!  How radical is that?

I canceled my usual schedule and got spontaneous. I did exactly what I felt like doing. There were impromptu trips to visit the marsh at sunset and watching big surf crash over the road at high tide in Wells. It was great!  I am once again reminded why I live here. I can go on vacation for a few hours and feel like I’ve really been away for a long time.
And even though the sun is setting earlier its actually helping me out. I don’t have to stay out till 9 pm to paint sunset. I can paint till 7:30 and call it a day. I am having fun with my new late day series! I am creating a whole bunch of sunset, dusk and evening paintings that I want to have all around me. I want my whole house to be bathed in the feeling of warm glowing light. And I’m just getting started…
I love painting outdoors in the late afternoon and evening. The light and the colors are so warm and soft.  Now I am going to keep that light and color and make it last !  I was in York Harbor one evening and the next one I was at Parsons Beach. I easily have over a dozen locations near by that are fabulous. Each location has its particular flavor and distinctive beauty. I usually paint 5-8 small paintings each evening. I am intent on capturing the different stages of sunset, dusk and evening. The colors are amazing. I’m using these small studies for larger paintings I create in the studio. I never know what I’m going to bring home. Some of these small ones are looking so good they will be framed after I am finished using them.

So here’s a toast to small ones and big ones. Every size I can think of.  I want to surround myself with warmth and glowing beauty. Yes, there will be enough so some of these will be available for sale. I do have a few exhibitions coming up in November and December.

And yes my new e course is coming along.  We will be releasing some bonus pre-launch videos soon. I will let you know when they are up on YouTube and Vimeo where you can watch them.  If you subscribe to my YouTube page you will receive a notice when each one is published.  Here is the link to my page.

Painting the Late Summer Sunset Challenge

I am working on a new series of sunset and evening paintings. This is the perfect time of the year to do that…

Its still warm during the daytime and cool at night. Summer is lingering like it usually does here on the coast. And the sun is setting early! That makes me a little sad but is a big help when painting these evening paintings. I love being out painting in this late light. I see the most amazingly beautiful scenes. And I meet the nicest people who are also out enjoying their favorite time of day.

This is a weather dependent project. It is a smart move for me to plan to get out and paint everyday for the next 30 days. I’m almost doing it. Some days I’m running too late to get out on time, the sunset is stark and uninteresting or there is lackluster evening light, so I’m skipping a few here and there. Its perfect to be able to pick and choose. Plus, I never know if I’m going to hit it right as I am packing up and leaving the house around 4pm. You can’t always depend on the skies to produce the perfect huge clouds at 7pm that you are watching float overhead at 2pm. Planning is necessary ! I’ll just add on a few more days at the end so I make sure I’ve seen 30 or more sunsets.

The rest of my time is being spent prepping for my new e course.  I had no idea it would be this much fun!  Marcus is my camera man and what a hoot that is!  He asks really good questions and stays right on top of what I’m doing. We will be releasing some bonus pre-launch videos soon. I will let you know when they are up on YouTube and Vimeo where you can watch them.  If you subscribe to my YouTube page you will receive a notice when each one is published.  Here is the link to my page.

Where has Summer gone?

I heard the honking first then two flocks of geese flew over head…heading south.  This week I spotted 3 different trees turning red.  Where has summer gone? This is a hint of what is coming next…

Is it really mid August already? Where has the summer gone? Its always like this in Maine. I remember these long lazy summer days when I was a kid. Summer seemed to stretch out like a big grassy meadow just waiting to be rolled in. Here on the coast after summer arrives on July 4th it feels like one big long party until Labor Day and then just as suddenly as the crowds  appeared they all leave… for about 2 weeks it is quiet.  Then a new group streams through until chilly November days drive them all south to warmer climates.

This is when I am happy I am one of those who stay behind. Late summer and autumn is my favorite time of the year. It is perfect for painting and I can find places park again. These last days of summer I have a tendency to get buried in my studio or office catching up on a back log of things that got lost in the summer party and not get out to paint as much as I’d like to. So I decided I’m staying local and I’m staying focused on appreciating this lovely season. The nights are cool, the days are warm and I am going out to paint. I just promised myself I will get out to paint every day for the next 30 days so I won’t miss the great moments that everyone else travels here to experience. I live here. This beautiful place is my back yard and I am appreciating it. This week I am painting all over the seacoast and I’m even taking a jaunt up into the mountains and lakes of New Hampshire. I’ll be painting in Wolfeboro, NH on Wednesday. What a blast!

If you are walking along the Marginal Way in Ogunquit, Maine some sunny afternoon keep a look out, you might find me painting on the rocks or down on Little Beach at low tide.  Hope to see you soon!

Thunderstorms & Plein Air painting

Well, that was an adventure!

The painting demo this past Saturday at the Hartwell House Inn was challenged by a line of thunderstorms that hit the coast about an hour before I was to paint in the garden. For those of you who live in the area you know what a fury that was!
I got there early to set up hoping the storms that were just beginning to rumble in North Berwick would move north, not east. But, that did not happen. I waited inside the inn watching the rain pound down.
Guests, fans and collectors arrived on time. But it was sopping wet outdoors and still sprinkling so I set up and painted a cup of tea in the front garden room. When I finished the still life the sun was shining brightly and fluffy white clouds drifted overhead.
I decided it was a good idea to move outdoors and do a plein air demo in the garden. And wow was it beautiful!  Everything was sparkling clean and fresh. We had a great time!
Marcus went live with the demo on Facebook. The internet connection would ebb and flow so there are a few moments that are a bit out of focus, but in the end we had a nice “show and tell” of the demo on my Mary Byrom Fine Art page on Facebook. Here is the link to watch it.

CATCHING UP

You might have noticed, I haven’t been posting my regular weekly news. It’s because of all of the snow! When we get hit with a big nor’easter I easily lose a half day or more just to shovel us out. We’ve had two big storms in the past 5 days. It takes two of us to move all this white stuff out of the way.  Marcus runs around with the snow blower, moving the bulk of it . I use the old fashioned shovel. It doesn’t bother me, I get a nice dose of fresh air!  Today it was gorgeous outdoors after the heavy snow we got last night.  Never mind a transformer blowing up in the middle of the night and knocking out all our power to add to the excitement !   Hey, it’s February in Maine, this is the norm!

NEW DESIGN CLASS NEXT WEEK

CABIN FEVER!!!!  If you have cabin fever this is perfect for you !  I have one spot in my new class that starts next week on Tuesday February 21st.  It’s a 6 week class. We meet at my studio in North Berwick. Time: 10 -1. Fee $220
If you have experience with oil, acrylic, watercolor or gouache you are welcome to join us. If you want to join us please contact me here.

MAKING WAVES

It was a great week in the studio! I’m in the thick of finishing paintings for my new artist-in-residence exhibit at the Beachmere Inn in their new freshly painted cafe. And of course, for my lovely collectors and galleries! Lots of new paintings are being released from the studio.
This week I’m working in the in acrylics. I love how fast and fluid they are. Sometimes acrylics suit my mood and currently I want to paint fast. All that great energy goes right into the painting.  Of course it has to do with being out in a nor’easter last week. There is nothing like the power of the sea in a storm!
I’m really loving the big surf and waves. That nor’easter we had last week has embedded  waves and surf into my mind.  I see waves in my mind’s eye all the time!

I will be doing a wave demo live on Facebook and Instagram! Stay tuned ! Follow me on my  Facebook and Instagram accounts so you can watch.

I will also be hosting a series of live demos and artist talks on Instagram. If you would like to see these please follow me on Instagram to view them. I will post times when I will be doing the live demos in my posts on my page on Instagram.
I will be posting dates and times on Instagram and on my page on Face Book. Please follow (by liking!) my Face Book page for the schedule.

I love doing these demos and I think Marcus (my hubby) has found a niche that is a perfect fit for him ! As soon as we go live he thinks he has his own TV comedy show. Everyone was laughing . It was so much fun!
