Maple Moon Farm

One winter afternoon on a farm in southwestern Maine, after painting in snow showers all afternoon two plein air painters get a taste of fresh sugar on snow!

Painting While its Snowing !

It snowed off and on the whole time we painted. What a great afternoon! I was happy I had my umbrella in the car. As soon as it started snowing I put it up. I had a sneaky feeling that it was going to snow off and on all afternoon. And it did ! Every few minutes a new snow squall would blow through.

Here is a peek at how I start my painting of a sugar house on a snowy late winter day.

Winter Skies, Clouds, haiku series

Happy Holidays Everyone!

I hope you are all well and thriving …and not getting too buried in the hustle bustle of the holiday season.  It is good to pause and appreciate the quiet time of the year. We have truly entered into winter. Its a peaceful day today with snow falling gently making everything fresh and white. The muted blue and violet colors of this overcast winter day are beautiful.

It feels like it was just a few weeks ago when summer insisted on lingering until Thanksgiving. I’m not complaining  I was happy with that extra long summer !  Its rare that we have empty beaches, parking lots  and warm weather.  I took advantage of it !

I was buried in work till the end of my season, delivering paintings to galleries and hanging a holiday show. The summer season which is my busiest time of year stretched with out a pause into December this year. So when all deliveries were made it was time to celebrate and shift gears. I took a week off, then eased back into work with a bit of attention to planning my schedule for 2018.

Christmas is rounding the corner and almost upon us with the New Year right behind it!  Here are some highlights 2018 !

Haiku Series ~ The Sea #8

The Sea #8
The Sea #8

This is the last painting in my series ‘ The Sea”.  I noticed that when I paint a series I reach a point when the images start to move in another direction. Its an interesting process that is heavily influenced by my plein air painting. I paint my haiku paintings on location as well as in the studio. I have a tendency to paint in oil en plein air and in acrylic in the studio.  I like the fast drying time of acrylic in the studio and the slow drying time of oils on location.  My ocean paintings in 2018 will be going in a new direction. Stay posted!

The Sea #8   Acrylic  8.5×12″  Available.

Haiku Series ~ The Sea #6

The Sea #6
The Sea #6

I often go out to paint in storms on the coast. I love painting during a Nor’easter. I’ve found a perfect location on the Nubble in York, Maine  where I can park my car to block the wind from hitting my easel. I have a wonderful easel called the Gloucester that is sturdy and strong. I use that easel in severe wind conditions. If the wind is so strong I have trouble opening my car door then I will paint from inside the car with the back hatch open.  When the wind is that extreme the crashing waves are huge.

The Sea #6  Acrylic 3.25×8.75  Available.

Haiku Series ~ The Sea #5

The Sea #5
The Sea #5

I’ve had this connection to the sea since I was a small child. I also really like wild weather.  When a stormy wind blows in off the ocean you will find me walking along the edge. There is nothing like a crisp, clean wind to blow the cobwebs out of your brain.  I always return home refreshed and invigorated. There nothing quite like a big bowl of soup or a hot cup of tea after a walk along the ocean during a winter storm. Heavenly.

The Sea #5  Acrylic  4×9.75   Available.

Haiku Series ~ The Sea #2

The Sea #2
The Sea #2

I’m watching a storm pulling out to sea. I watch many storms race out to sea. I’ve watched years of storms blow out to sea.  The weather often moves in from the west and travels out over the ocean.  This is one of my memories of a big storm.

Hurricane Along the Maine Coast

It’s hurricane season on the coast…

Last week I changed my work schedule twice to go set up my easel on the coast to paint the great surf  that hurricane Jose sent our way. We were lucky. No storm.  Only the big waves arrived here on the Maine coast. The surfers and plein air painters were very happy.
So were all the visitors here on vacation after the summertime crowds are gone. It was beautiful.  I met the nicest people while out painting this week. Some of these visitors had never been to Maine before. They were amazed at the variety of landscapes they were seeing. Maine has such a variety of landscapes with eastern and western water views.  People couldn’t believe they could watch sunrise and sunsets over the water. There’s nothing quite like this amazing amount of peninsulas and islands we have in our back yard.

They marveled that I actually lived here. I could go  anytime I liked and look at the amazing views.  I remember when I made the decision to move to the seacoast. It had to do with a memory. Of course it was from vacations when I was a child. My grandmother loved Maine. My mother loved Maine. My mother brought us to Maine on a summer vacation. Even though I had plenty of ocean time on Cape Cod when I was a small child, it was South Harpswell, Maine that made me feel like I had arrived home.
The big old house on the water with its little tiny sandy beach looking out to the little island in the bay stole my heart away. The fingers of land reaching out into the water with nooks and crannies, the big dark pines, the little harbors packed with fishing boats and docks and the clusters of little old houses scattered among the thick woods and across the the rocky fields made me want to stay there forever.  Whenever I go back to South Harpswell I get the same feeling that I did when I first went there. I feel like I am home.
I have favorite places to I paint whenever I go there. It’s closer to my house than Boston is. Sadly the sweet, classic, white farm house has been completely over hauled into a plastic summer vacation home. But the bones of the real house are still there and the tiny beach still looks out at the same island. Mackerel Cove still looks beautiful at any time of the day and in any season. And when I get to a nice open spot on Basin Road in West Harpswell and look west on a crisp fall day I can see Mount Washington in New Hampshire with a bright cap of snow on it.
It’s no accident I love painting landscapes.
