One Day Workshop

One Day Workshop
Strategies for Painting the Landscape

For 2019 I am offering a series of one day workshops.

The 2019 series of Plein air workshops will explore a variety of approaches to painting the landscape, with emphasis on finding meaning and a narrative in the landscape and a personal connection to content. Students then work with a limited/expanded palette to paint their narrative of the landscape investigating scale, content, drawing and placement on the canvas. Historical strategies for relating to and depicting the landscape with paint will be discussed.
All painting will be en plein air on location.

Media & techniques:
Students will begin each day drawing/sketching using it as a starting point for exploring and conceptualizing the landscape and for working with narrative, composition and design. Students will first execute a small value painting of their intended design.
Then students will work with oil, acrylic, gouache, or watercolor to investigate overall tonality, light and color, using both subtracted and additive processes.
The day will begin with a brief period of observation and discussion of the content available. Daily Activities include demonstrations of techniques; lectures and discussion; and a group critique.
