Making Color Sing

Painting in brilliant light. Often when I am painting a view where I have to face late light I set up my umbrella to shield my eyes from the setting sun.
Painting in brilliant light. Often when I am painting a view where I have to face late light I set up my umbrella to shield my eyes from the setting sun. This way I can still see the colors and not be blinded by the light.

What makes color sing? I’m spending some time teaching a studio painting class this fall after a summer teaching plein air painting classes and I notice certain themes emerging among my students.  My students are mostly beginners and intermediate painters. I noticed that even the more experienced painters struggled with the same basic issues that the beginners did.   Value, color and temperature seem to be the three most noticeable issues that dominate the “need more attention”list.  I think this has to do with allowing the eye to see what is in front of us then training the brain to interpret it.  Painting with a wide variety of colors is not easy to do. Painting in three or four values from light to dark is much easier.  So its back to basics! And I think I’ve found a few simple things that will make it easier to cement these value and color relationships in the brain and might just make the whole learning experience a lot more interesting and fun.
