I heard the honking first then two flocks of geese flew over head…heading south. This week I spotted 3 different trees turning red. Where has summer gone? This is a hint of what is coming next…
Is it really mid August already? Where has the summer gone? Its always like this in Maine. I remember these long lazy summer days when I was a kid. Summer seemed to stretch out like a big grassy meadow just waiting to be rolled in. Here on the coast after summer arrives on July 4th it feels like one big long party until Labor Day and then just as suddenly as the crowds appeared they all leave… for about 2 weeks it is quiet. Then a new group streams through until chilly November days drive them all south to warmer climates.
This is when I am happy I am one of those who stay behind. Late summer and autumn is my favorite time of the year. It is perfect for painting and I can find places park again. These last days of summer I have a tendency to get buried in my studio or office catching up on a back log of things that got lost in the summer party and not get out to paint as much as I’d like to. So I decided I’m staying local and I’m staying focused on appreciating this lovely season. The nights are cool, the days are warm and I am going out to paint. I just promised myself I will get out to paint every day for the next 30 days so I won’t miss the great moments that everyone else travels here to experience. I live here. This beautiful place is my back yard and I am appreciating it. This week I am painting all over the seacoast and I’m even taking a jaunt up into the mountains and lakes of New Hampshire. I’ll be painting in Wolfeboro, NH on Wednesday. What a blast!
If you are walking along the Marginal Way in Ogunquit, Maine some sunny afternoon keep a look out, you might find me painting on the rocks or down on Little Beach at low tide. Hope to see you soon!
